This tour was everything we expected. We expected to see beautiful places and rock art. We expected to have a knowledgeable host. And most importantly, we expected to immerse ourselves in the oldest living culture. This tour delivered all these things and then some. Tim was a great host. He answered all our questions on the way, but when met by our ‘Bininj’ guide, he let him do all the talking. I would thoroughly recommend this tour. Oh, and the lunch was sensational.

It was a fantastic experience! I was happy to hear the stories and traditions of native Australians, told directly by them.

What an excellent way to experience aboriginal culture and Arnhem Land country. By luck, we picked a time when the billabongs were still full but the roads open. Still quite warm on the walks to the rock galleries though. Tim, the genial and respectful guide/driver made the day easy and comfortable. He even catered for our vegan diet with no fuss at all. The stand out though was Seb, the local aboriginal ranger who joined us at morning tea, took us to places of interest, explained everything we were seeing and answered all our questions… on anything. Friendly, knowledgable, happy and keen to share his world with us. Thanks guys!

Comprehensive tour of Aboriginal rock art sites in west Arnhem Land. Excellent tour guide/driver; wonderfully informed local Bjnij guide; amazing rock art sites; great lunch incountry.

This West Arnhem Land Day Tour from Darwin is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and one that will remain with you long after your stay in the Northern Territory capital comes to an end. It’s a unique opportunity to experience daily life for the Yolngu traditional owners in a restricted, Aboriginal-controlled zone, and immerse yourself in a culture that has existed for thousands of years.

Departing Darwin just before first light, you’ll journey east through Kakadu National Park and over its border with Arnhem Land — home to around 18,000 people. If you happen to be travelling just after the wet season, expect to see floodplains crisscrossed with streams and carpeted with emerald-coloured grasses. At other times of the dry season, the region has a parched beauty that is equally stunning.

Your first stop is the Injalak Arts Centre in the small township of Gunbalanya. The centre has around two-hundred-member artists and weavers, and you’ll have the opportunity to watch some of them at work.

From there, you’ll join one local artist on a walk up nearby Injalak Hill. This rocky outcrop harbours some of the best examples of rock art in Arnhem Land (some say, in Australia). The array of artwork is mind-blowing and the view from the top of the hill will take your breath away. It’s here that you’ll enjoy an included picnic lunch.

Back at the Injalak Arts Centre, you’ll have time to purchase a piece of art from this not-for-profit organisation or simply admire more of the age-old creativity on display. All too soon it’s time to begin the journey home to Darwin.

This West Arnhem Land Day Tour from Darwin is a big day, but well worth every minute. It will be the absolute highlight of your Top End holiday.
