Located just 90 minutes’ drive south of the Northern Territory capital, Litchfield National Park is a popular day trip destination for locals and visitors alike. This Litchfield National Park Tour from Darwin is a relaxed and easy way to see the best of the park, and you’ll travel in comfortable, air-conditioned coach transport. The park sits on a tabletop plateau and is punctuated by stunning waterfalls and waterholes, several of which are surveyed annually for crocodiles and deemed safe for swimming — so bring your swimwear! A picnic-style lunch is included in the cost of the tour.
The tour departs from the city at around 7.30am and heads south. You’ll travel through a variety of landscapes and enjoy informative commentary on points of interest from your local guide. Having passed through the gates to the park, your day of discovery begins!
Highlights of the tour include a visit to fabulous Florence Falls. Watch gallons of water pouring over the rugged sandstone escarpment, before trekking down the 160 steps to the base of the falls for a refreshing swim and stress-busting massage — courtesy of Mother Nature!
You’ll also visit Tolmer Falls, which cascades powerfully over two massive escarpments and can be viewed from a cliffside platform. The gorge into which the waterfall plummets is home to rare orange horseshoe and ghost bats.
Your next stop is probably the most popular spot in the park — Wangi Falls (pronounced wong-guy). There’s time for another swim here, or to take a stroll on the boardwalk walking trail. You’ll see myriad bird species and other wildlife.
In the afternoon, you’ll stop to take in another of the park’s most famous features — its gigantic cathedral termite mounds and magnetic termite mounds. Magnetic mounds aren’t actually magnetic, but run north to south with the broad flat sides facing east and west. They were mistaken for gravestones by early explorers.
This Litchfield National Park Tour from Darwin is sublime experience and a must-do on any first visit to the Top End.
