We did the tour to Port Arthur last weekend. It was fantastic. The tour guide Terry was very informative and friendly. I travelled with my husband and one year old. We stopped at a couple of places along the way, including the Richmond Bridge, which was great. Once at Port Arthur, we had just under 4.5 hours to explore. We had the guided tour first (it was 45 minutes) and then a half hour boat tour. We could have easily spent another hour walking around, as there was just so much to see and take in. On the way home we stopped at the Tasman Arch. It was a really memorable day. I highly recommended the tour.

The tour to Port Arthur is such a long journey then we spend too much time inside where my 2 young adult did not enjoyed and felt boring during the tour. It was tiring as you need to do a lot of walking.

We really enjoyed this tour, which was made so interesting and entertaining by our driver Phil. Phil was friendly, full of facts and stories and very respectful and caring of all his passengers. Port Arthur was well worth seeing, and much more beautiful than I expected. The coach was comfortable and the whole trip was very enjoyable.

Excellent trip. Phil the driver was the perfect host. Took great care of us. Dropped us off at our hotel.

Port Arthur is a great day trip. Phil (the driver) was fantastic and his local knowledge was great. Would highly recommend for anyone wanting to see Port Arthur.

A great day! Really enjoyed learning the history and viewing what remains. Phil our driver was excellent. Only things to note were that we had to move around quickly to see everything – we really just skimmed through everything. The tour groups were very large, so we did our own self guided tour.

The bus trip was amazing and out driver Mark was a wealth of knowledge. The tour guides at Port Arthur were amazing with their facts. I would recommend this company and this tour as we also stopped along the way and visited some lookouts such as Tasman Arch.

This Port Arthur Day Tour from Hobart is the ultimate day out for history buffs, but it really offers something for everyone. It’s a wonderful introduction to the Port Arthur Historic Site — one of Australia’s best-preserved convict-built settlements, and now arguably Tasmania’s top tourist attraction. You’ll enjoy the convenience of pick-up and drop-off at most Hobart hotels, and travel by air-conditioned coach on the 100-kilometre journey to the southern Tasman Peninsula. On arrival at the site, Port Arthur’s official guides will bring the past to life as you take part in the immersive experiences that are included in your tour price. It’s an emotive day in many ways, and one you’ll always remember.

Once hotel pick-ups are completed, you’ll depart the city and travel east towards the Tasman Peninsula. From October to April, your driver will take you through the quaint heritage town of Richmond and provide a short photo stop at the famous convict-built Richmond Bridge. It’s a fitting prelude to your day at Port Arthur.

The peninsula is almost entirely surrounded by water (with narrow Eaglehawk Neck the only entry point), which made it the ideal location for incarceration of prisoners from England — most of whom couldn’t swim. You’ll make a photo stop at Pirates Bay and soak in the dramatic coastal scenery.

On arrival at the Port Arthur Historic Site, you’ll have a total of five hours to immerse yourself in the history of this once-dreaded penal settlement. It was constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries, and helpful guides stationed across the site will point out key buildings and monuments as you explore.

You’ll also enjoy a short harbour cruise past the aptly named Isle of the Dead, where more than a thousand convicts and colonial officials were laid to rest during the settlement’s working life.

The afternoon is free for you to explore the site at your own pace. Lunch can be purchased (at your own expense), or you may like to bring a picnic with you.

This Port Arthur Day Tour from Hobart arrives back in the city at between 5 and 5.30pm, with drop-off at your point of departure.

Optional Isle of the Dead Walking Tour

The Isle of the Dead had two separate burial sections — one for convicts on the island’s southern side (who were largely buried in unmarked graves), and one on the northern side for officials and free settlers (which were marked by headstones). Join an optional walking tour of the island and learn more about its dark history. You’ll hear the personal stories of some of the convicts and prison officers (and their families) who passed during their time at Port Arthur.
