Prime safari season in Zambia runs between June and October each year. These drier months see an abundance of wildlife clustered around local waterholes, which often attracts predators. The lodge has just twelve accommodation options: eight larger suites for families and small groups, and four twin tents in a smaller, private setting — perfect for those seeking complete sanctuary. 3. Mara Plains Camp, Maasi Mara National Reserve (Kenya)
With its extraordinary wildlife viewing opportunities, the Maasi Mara is high on the list of must-sees for many visitors to Africa. However, there is a way you can avoid the tourist crush and do it in style. Mara Plains Camp is a boutique tented lodge tucked away in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, which sits on the Maasai Mara National Reserve’s northern boundary. Operated by Great Plains Conservation, the camp is surrounded by a 35,000-acre private game reserve — home to a high concentration of big cats (including lion, leopard, and cheetah).
The camp’s decor can best be described as decadent bush elegance, and blends with, rather than detracts from, the splendid natural setting. There are just seven sumptuous twin tents — each with a traditional-style copper bath overlooking the private verandah. Guests have the use of a Canon camera, lenses, and a pair of Swarovski binoculars with which to capture incredible wildlife moments and memories.
Mara Plains Camp is open all year round and is an all-inclusive experience. It’s another fabulous option for seeing the annual migration, which generally occurs during July and August (depending on rainfall). Plan a stay of at least four nights; you won’t want to leave!
