Think Margaret River south of Perth, the Yarra Valley near Melbourne, Adelaide’s Barossa Valley, and the Hunter Valley north of Sydney. And let’s not forget Brisbane’s Mount Tamborine. Mount Tamborine? Yes, that’s right! The Queensland capital also has its very own wine region. It’s situated just an hour’s drive from the CBD, and today I’m joining The Vino Bus on their popular Mount Tamborine Wine Tour from Brisbane.
As our driver Michael completes guest pick-ups, he uses the time to explain how Mount Tamborine was formed some 20 million years ago by a volcanic eruption in northern New South Wales. The region enjoys a gorgeous cool climate (one of the prerequisites for ripening grapes slowly and intensifying flavour) and has several boutique wineries in operation. That said, only a small proportion of the fruit used for wine production is grown locally; the majority comes from the Granite Belt further south.

After a steep and winding ascent of the mountainside, we arrive at our first stop — the multi-award-winning Tamborine Mountain Distillery. The original proprietors, Alla and Michael, moved to the mountain from Tasmania in the early 1990s. Their property came with an abundance of fruit trees, so the entrepreneurial couple decided to ferment the fruit and produce small batch spirits. Today, the distillery has a new owner and location, but has retained its much-loved character. We get to try a signature spirit and our choice of two fruit liqueurs.
From there, it’s a short drive to gorgeous Witches Falls Winery. The cellar door is set in lush gardens, and the staff are hugely passionate about the wines they produce. After the guided tasting (which is accompanied by a selection of yummy local cheeses), Michael — like a doting dad — bundles us all together for a group photo.
Located just a stone’s throw from Witches Falls, picturesque Cedar Creek Estate vineyard and winery is a popular wedding venue — and it’s not hard to see why. This is our lunch venue, but first we enjoy another tasting and a dash of stand-up comedy from owner John (whose stories leave us in fits of laughter!). Cedar Creek Estate’s in-house restaurant overlooks flowering gardens and a tranquil lake. There’s a choice of substantial main courses, followed by a delicious dessert.
We take a short break from sipping and supping to drink in sweeping views of the hinterland from a local lookout, before heading for the final stop of the day — Mason Wines. We’ve already seen some very pretty spots, but this one takes the cake. The cellar door’s deck overlooks a lawned area and rustic vineyard, framed by verdant bushland. The guided tasting encompasses aromatic whites and bold reds, and we while away the remainder of our visit in the warm winter sunshine.
It’s the hospitality offered by Mount Tamborine’s winemakers that makes this such a wonderful day out; that, and the top drops you’ll get to try along the way.
