While there’s only one answer you hope to hear, there are lots of different ways — and places — to pop the question.
And if you’re the one doing the proposing, you’ll want to make it as special as possible. With plenty of big decisions to come on a venue, the guest list, and ladies’ and men’s wedding rings, step one is to get creative on how to turn the initial request into a lifelong memory.
Here are ten amazing places to propose across Australia.
1. Uluru at sunrise, Red Centre (NT)
It’s a new day in the heart of Australia and the dawning of your lives together. The symbolism is rich and there for the taking! If there was ever a time and place to propose, sunrise at mighty Uluru is it — and a sunrise viewing tour will have you in just the right place at exactly the right time. Drop to one knee as the sun’s first rays strike the iron oxidated surface of the mighty monolith, sparking a firestorm of colour and hopefully, a rock solid ‘yes’!

2. Skywalk, Sydney Tower (NSW)
If love lifts you and your partner up where you belong, the Skywalk platform atop Sydney Tower is the perfect place to do the honours — 268 metres above the busy streets of Sydney’s CBD. And the team at Sydney Tower Eye will be more than happy to help you plan your soaring submittal for a life together. The glass floored platform facing the glittering harbour is the best spot to do the drop. And just to be sure you don’t accidentally do that with the ring, it will need to wear its own mini harness.

3. Chocolate Tour, Melbourne (VIC)
The magic of Melbourne’s European style laneways and arcades is probably enough to get any marriage proposal over the line (and you won’t be the first person to have knelt down in the centre of Degraves Street or along street art emblazoned Hosier Lane!). However, you can make the moment even sweeter on a walking tour of this urban maze with the fabulous team at Chocoholic Tours. Again, they’ll work with you to spring the surprise on your soft-centred soulmate. Have a box of hand-crafted heart-shaped pralines on hand to seal the deal!

4. Reef Suites, Whitsundays (QLD)
It’s true that there are plenty of other fish in the sea, and a good number of them will be swimming right past your window as you propose to your catch on the majestic Great Barrier Reef. The underwater Reef Suites at Cruise Whitsundays’ Reefworld pontoon are seriously romantic and give a whole new meaning to the term ‘a room with a view’. Enjoy a sunset drink up on deck, followed by dinner under the stars. From there, it’s all up to you. And dare we say it, don’t let this be the one that gets away!

5. Cape Tribulation Beach, Daintree Rainforest (QLD)
While perhaps not the ideal metaphor for a long-lasting marriage (but stay with us!), Cape Tribulation is located in Tropical North Queensland’s magnificent Daintree Rainforest (part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics). Here the rainforest comes right to the edge of the shimmering Coral Sea and exchanges a brief kiss with the also World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef (now you see where we’re going!).

It’s the perfect spot to share a celebratory peck of your own. Book an organised day trip from Cairns that includes a walk on Cape Tribulation Beach, and word up your tour guide on the impending event. Celebrate afterwards with a sweet treat from the Daintree Ice Cream Company.
6. Wineglass Bay, Freycinet (TAS)
Tassie is peppered with scenic spots in which to request another’s hand, but few can hold a candle to sublime Wineglass Bay in Freycinet National Park on the island’s east coast. The bay itself is only accessible on foot or by boat. If you want to push the proverbial out on the latter, Pennicott Wilderness Journeys’ Wineglass Bay Cruises depart from Coles Bay and will offer you the sweeping arch of the bay as a backdrop for the big moment. Alternatively, consider hiking to the Wineglass Bay Lookout and proposing there. The walk from the car park takes about an hour each way and on a good day the view is spectacular. Pop the question and the corks on a couple of chilled piccolos hidden in your backpack.

7. Gondolas on the Swan, Perth (WA)
The Italian city of Venice is unboundedly one the most romantic places on the planet — and while proposing in a gondola on the Grand Canal is almost certain to succeed, it will be an expensive business. The same effect can be achieved much closer to home, and for much less coin at Perth’s Elizabeth Quay. Gondolas on the Swan operates tours in incredibly authentic looking Venetian-style gondolas. Book a one-hour gold cruise with a gondolier in traditional Venetian garb and get ready to talk ti amo. A chilled bottle of Veuve and a selection of choccies are included in the cruise price.

8. Hot air balloon flight, Barossa Valley (SA)
They say love gives you wings, but you won’t need them in South Australia’s stunning Barossa Valley — thanks to the mass of hot air above you on an ultra romantic balloon flight at sunrise with Barossa Balloon Adventures. Hotel pick-up is included, along with a breakfast of local specialties (accompanied by sparkling wine) after your flight high above the valley’s verdant vineyards. Just don’t forget the ring! When you’re between one and three thousand feet above the ground and going where the wind takes you, there’s no go back for it and no one can hear you scream.

9. Living Desert Sculptures, Broken Hill (NSW)
Love in the desert may sound like the title of a Bogart film from the 1940s, but you can make it the plotline for a modern romance in the outback city of Broken Hill in far west New South Wales. Situated on a windswept hilltop, nine-or-so kilometres’ drive from town, the twelve Living Desert Sculptures are this remote region’s premier tourist attraction — and a truly memorable location to propose. The largely abstract sandstone artworks were created by a mix of local and international artists, and look their epic best at sunset. Tip: You’ll need a sizeable rock for the finger to compete with these whoppers!

10. Blue Mountains Botanical Garden, Mount Tomah (NSW)
If you want to say it with flowers, there are Botanic Gardens across the country where love will undoubtedly blossom. Special spots include Adelaide Botanic Gardens’ Palm House, the lovely Lily Pond at the Royal Tasmanian Botanic Gardens in Hobart, and the fairy light festooned fig trees in Brisbane’s City Botanic Gardens. You can even go punting on the lake in the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne. However, our favourite horticultural hangout is the cool climate Blue Mountains Botanic Gardens at Mount Tomah — a 40-minute drive from Katoomba. The Formal Garden is reminiscent of that which you’d expect to find at a fairytale French chateau, and is the ideal location for a proposal. Throw down a rug afterwards and enjoy a picnic.
