The state of New South Wales is one giant adventure playground!
From canyoning in the Blue Mountains to jumping out of a plane over Byron Bay, there are endless ways to push your limits and get the the pulse rate pumping. And you’ll be in good company. Given this is Australia’s most populous state, it’s safe to assume there are more daredevils per capita here than anywhere else in the country!
Work your way through this bucket list of the best adventure activities in New South Wales.
1. Go bridge climbing in Sydney
Climbing courses don’t get any bigger or better than the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Conquering the Coat Hanger has become a national and international obsession, and to date an estimated four million+ people from 140 countries have trekked up the 1,332 steps to the top of those mighty steel arches. The great thing about the Sydney Bridge Climb is that anyone of a reasonable fitness level can do it (the age of climbers to date has ranged from 8 to 100!). Along the way you’ll hear interesting stories from your climb leader about the construction of the bridge and the role it has played in Sydney life over the decades.

2. Go mountain biking in Eden
Eden is NSW’s southernmost town — and with national parks on two sides and the third deepest harbour in the South Hemisphere on its doorstep, the stage is set for some epic pastimes! Speaking of which, in 2023 the town opened a network of 58 kilometres of gravity-fed mountain biking trails known as Gravity Eden. From a peak elevation of 300 metres and with the incredible beauty of Nullica State Forest to ride through, this machine-cut trail is super fast and packs plenty of punch for riders of all skill levels. Book your Eden accommodation and get ready to battle the berms!
3. Go canyoning in the Blue Mountains
The rugged Blue Mountains National Park west of Sydney covers around a million hectares and encompasses a wide variety of landscapes and some seriously tough terrain. It’s very popular as a climbing, abseiling, and canyoning destination, and even a complete beginner can get a taste of these thrilling adventure activities. The Blue Mountains Adventure Company is based in Katoomba and offers beginner, intermediate, and advanced trips, and even family itineraries. It’s a chance to push your limits and test metal you didn’t even know you had — all under the watchful eyes of your expert guides.

4. Go jet-boating in Sydney
Back in the capital — if you have a need for speed, satisfy it on Sydney Harbour on board a jet-boat! Oz Jet Boating departs from Circular Quay for 30 minutes of heart-stopping twists and turns on the city’s eponymous waterway. Hold on extra tight for those 360-degree spins and power brake stops!

5. Go skydiving in the Northern Rivers
There are few activities that say ‘Yeah, I’m a thrill seeker’ quite like jumping out of a plane at 15,000 feet. Each to their own. If you’re up for the challenge, Skydive Australia operates several dive sites across the country — including in the glorious Northern Rivers region of NSW. Presumably you’ll be doing a tandem dive (No? Wow, you really are a seasoned thrillster!), which will see you harnessed to an instructor and freefalling at 200+ kilometres per hour for 60 seconds, before levelling out under your chute and enjoying the spectacular views of Byron Bay on the way back to solid ground.

6. Go hang-gliding in Wollongong
You won’t reach quite the same lofty heights on a hang-gliding flight, but the thrill will still be very real. Thirty million years in the making and framing the city of Wollongong, the Illawarra Escarpment is a 500-metre high sandstone ridge that hosts all manner of outdoor pursuits — including hang-gliding flights. Bald Hill in Stanwell Park is the primary launch site for Hangglide Oz, which offers tandem flights with an instructor. Flights take around 30 minutes and offer incredible bird’s-eye views of Grand Pacific Drive and the wider Illawarra Coast. If you’ve always wanted to soar like an eagle (as opposed to remaining stuck on the ground like, well, a turkey) then this is the adventure activity for you.
7. Go rope swinging in Newcastle
What bona fide adventurer doesn’t dream of channelling their inner Tarzan and swinging through the jungle via various conveniently placed vines? Well, if you’re happy to have gum trees stand in for the jungle and ropes make do for the vegetative lifelines, swing by (see what we did there?) Treetops Adventure in Newcastle. It’s situated just a short drive west of the city in Blue Gum Hills and offers a dizzying array of rope courses featuring flying foxes, Tarzan swings, tightropes, log ladders, and the like. No experience is needed; just turn up ready to jungle jive. Courses are also offered in Sydney, the Central Coast, Coffs Harbour, and Nowra.

8. Go shark diving in Sydney
Facing your fear is all in a days work for a bona fide adventurer, but what if that fear is an apex predator from the deep? Shark Dive Xtreme at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium will bring you face to snout with grey nurse sharks, Port Jackson sharks, wobbegongs, and giant stingrays, and you’ll do it all without the protection of a cage! Queue the soundtrack from Jaws…
